2017 - Year in Review

By Alex McBride on 31st December 2017

It’s been a landmark year for the European Gaming League team and we thought we’d give you a quick rundown of what we’ve been up to over the past twelve months

PES League Barcelona - 11th February

What better way to kick off the new year than with the first of the PES League European Regional Finals, held at the iconic Nou Camp stadium in Barcelona. As part of our new partnership with Konami we consulted on & executed the global strategy for the PES League in 2017, which included stage design, tournament format and broadcast format.

The thirteen metre in-house LED wall provided a great way for those at the event to catch all the action from anywhere in the room, as well as providing a great backdrop for the live broadcast. After a close weekend of competition, Jose Carlos Sánchez bested the other fifteen players in attendance to walk away with $20,000 and a ticket to the PES League World Finals.

PC Gamer Weekender -18th & 19th February

After the success of the inaugural PC Gamer Weekender in 2016 we were invited back to once again run the esports area of the event, this time held at Olympia London. Featuring daily tournaments on titles such as Rocket League, For Honor, Hearthstone, League of Legends & others, we kitted out the tournament stations with high end gaming PCs and peripherals. Those in attendance, new to esports, were given the chance to experience what it’s like to play in a competitive environment, with many tournament winners throughout the weekend walking away with goody bags provided by our partners.

Middle Eastern Gaming League (MEGL) Launch - March

March saw the launch of the Middle Eastern Gaming League (MEGL), which included the introduction of the world’s first Arabised tournament platform. We’ve hired a local team that have access to studio facilities as well as the guidance and experience of the EGL team. Since launch MEGL have already worked with a number of renown brands in the region including Nvidia, Breadtalk and Batelco - a big 2018 lies ahead for the venture!

PES League Liverpool - 29th April

The PES League runs half the year, in partnership with the UEFA Champions League, the events come thick and fast if you’re a competitor - or hosting the event! Late in April the EGL team rolled into Anfield, the home of Liverpool FC. The team tweaked the setup from the Barcelona event in February taking on client and competitor feedback, improving the broadcast, venue setup and player experience. As the final event to qualify for the World Championship finals in June it was all or nothing for the finalists, with sixteen of the best players presented from across Europe. Players arrived on the Liverpool team bus, were treated like footballers sitting down for lunch in the Liverpool Legends room and given a VIP tour of the stadium and newly extended Main Stand.

Special guest commentator and Liverpool legend Jim Beglin called the close of the action and after a day of frighteningly strong competition, Ettore Giannuzzi lifted the $20,000 cheque aloft. The finalists for the PES League were now set with a little over a month to go.

SDMN vs YouTube Allstars - 21st May

In between esports events, we find the time to work with some of the biggest names in YouTube, this time the Sidemen. EGL worked on the ground to deliver an event at Charlton AFC which saw YouTube sensations the Sidemen (& friends) take on a eleven of the biggest YouTubers. For the first time in over a decade The Valley stadium was full to capacity with 27,000 in attendance to watch the match unfold. The broadcast reigns at the highest live audience of a YouTube live stream, beating the Champions League final. The EGL team assisted with merchandise set up, sales and broadcast. A highlight from the event was organising with local police our first police escort to guide the players into the event safely.

PES League World Finals - 2nd June

The jewel in the PES League crown is the finals and there was no better weekend to stage this on than the Champions League final weekend. The players were flown in from all corners of the world as sixteen of the world best players battled for $200,000. The EGL team wanted to take the event up a notch from the regional finals putting on a show fit for the finale at the Emirates Stadium, home of Arsenal FC. EGL sourced talent, ran the production with the show reaching an audience of over 1.5million across multiple broadcast platforms.

GuiFera walked away as the 2017 PES League world champion however the prizes did not end there as the very next day the players were whisked to Cardiff to a exclusive box within the stadium to watch Real Madrid beat Juventus in the Champions League final.
